Smart Home Security Checklist Before Leaving Your House
Combine ordinary closing checks with a quick review of your smart setup.
Close and lock the right openings
Before leaving, check the doors and windows you want to keep closed. Lock important storage as needed. A sensor update can help you check a state, but it does not turn a key or make a door stronger. Tell other household members which areas should stay unused while you are away.
Choose the right alert settings
Think about anyone staying at home before turning on alarms or motion alerts. Check the device and battery updates your app provides. Make sure your phone can receive notifications. If something looks disconnected, check it first. A router change or phone setting can affect a setup that worked before.
Check your camera views and light settings
If you use cameras, check the views that matter and keep them away from private areas. Review any chosen light schedule. These tools help you see and respond to activity; they do not guarantee protection. Avoid changing unfamiliar settings just before you leave unless you have time to test them.
Know what to do after an alert
Agree who will read alerts and whom they can contact if something needs attention. Messages can be delayed by connection problems. Do not ask someone to enter a place that looks unsafe. When you return, review any unwanted alerts and ask about changes that could make the setup easier to use.
